12 Reasons Why I Won’t Fill Out A Job Application

and There’s a Pretty Good Chance Other Milennials Won’t Either

As a not-so distant college graduate, there came a time when I was filling out almost 50 job applications every couple of days! Needless to day, Indeed became my very best friend.

millenials

I would scour pages and pages of positions for hours, find a position I thought was fitting, and “click wherever” to apply. Well, in a lot of cases, I wouldn’t go past this point from a number a reasons.

1. Company culture is EXTREMELY important to me. What is the company saying about their brand? Are they passionate? Up beat? Innovative? If not, I sense impending boredom and i’m on to the next one.

2. The application process is TOOOOOOO LOOOOOOOOOONG! I upload a resume in the beginning then have to go through an entire application process to input the SAME information! It feels like a futile and archaic process that takes up A LOT of time, so yet again, I keep it trucking.

3. Now comes the Company Website! Do they have some sort of “Meet the Team” page? I like to see who I would be working with and whether or not any of them look like me. I like to see diversity, it makes for an immersion of cultures, ideas and creative perspectives.

4.PAY! A lot of companies exclude this and I understand, because pay is often based on education and experience. But, I need at LEAST a salary range! – That’s fair.

5. Back to the company site again, are they giving back? Is the company involved in the community? Do they push corporate responsibility? Are employees volunteering? If not? Red flag! I’m over you!

6. GLASSDOOR! Oh yes! This is my absolute FAVORITE measuring method, because I want to know WHAT THE EMPLOYEES ARE SAYING ABOUT THE COMPANY! Are they happy with the values? Is there work/life balance (Which isn’t of much importance to me now, but it may be later on down the line when I have kids and a family)? Are there growth opportunities? Hell, Are the employees even HAPPY?!

7. Glassdoor 2.0, What is the interview process like? Is it an exchange between two parties uncovering if the applicant is as much of a fit for the company as the company is for the applicant? Are the interviewers engaging? Do they interview twice, once on phone and in person or do they interview several times? What kind of questions do they ask?

8. Do I have to write a cover letter????? This is laziness more than anything and depends more on the job that i’m applying for. If it’s something that i’m passionate about, I will write my little heart out in a cover letter. If it’s a bleh, I just need a job i’ll take anything. To hell with it, I’m moving on.

9. As a social media obsessor and considering that it’s a huge part of what I do, I like to see the company engaging with its audience on social media. Are they re-tweeting? Replying? Mentioning? Are they commenting on customer concerns posted to their Facebook page? What’s the turn around time?

10. I’m not qualified enough. I’ll read through the entire ad thinking “I can do that”, “I can do that too!”, “Oh I got this!” then get to the bottom and they want 5 years of experience, 10 years of experience, 30 years of experience and I decide “Welp! Won’t waste my time with that! Now that i’m older, I think that I would actually apply to a position that required a certain number of years even if I didn’t have it. The only surefire way NOT to get a job? Is NOT to apply! But, it still is a deterrent.

11. It’s a strictly Sales Job disguised as Marketing, Advertising or Public Relations. That, my friends, is BEYOND irritating.

12. The job sounds boring. Granted, there will be instances at every job where it isn’t the most thrilling place to be, but sheer monotony would drive me absolutely bat “ish” crazy!

Life is but a Dream: My Favorite Moments

images2

So, as everyone SHOULD know, Beyonce’s documentary “Life is but a dream” debuted last night and it was EPIC!

If you haven’t seen it already – watch it here:

Beyonce’ allowed her fans into her, previously IRON CLAD, personal life and as a fan, I was extremely appreciative. Jay-Z and Beyonce’ looked AMAZING at the premiere by the by:

HBO+Documentary+Film+Beyonce+Life+But+Dream+AKNoDj1HIoTl

So, as I sit here and watch it AGAIN on HBO GO, I decided to share with you all some of my FAVORITE moments:

One, I enjoyed seeing her so vulnerable. It puts into perspective that – despite the fame – she is still a person and deals with the same trivial life problems that average people do.

I LOVED the part where Jay-Z and Beyonce’ sang Coldplay’s song “Yellow” to one another. They looked adorable and you can tell how much they love one another. Both of their shells were completely gone and we were allowed to see who they really were and how they really acted around one another.

BEYONCE’ ACTUALLY CURSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally forgot about how AMAZING Beyonce’s Billboard Awards performance was and it was awesome to see what went into all of that.

The big reveal at the MTV awards! I remember when I first saw this moment. I literally screamed!

beyonce_0

What we didn’t see at the MTV awards, was this shared moment with her husband after

beyonce3-1204

And then the BELLY!!!!!!!! It’s amazing the type of person this woman is. Her daughter is 13 months now and she waited this long to put the rumors to rest. She waited until SHE was ready and until she felt like the media deserved a response. Haters say what?………

Beyonce’ actually said, “I’m going to go make love to my husband” I can’t even BEGIN to imagine what it took for her to say that in public. Then she played a clip of her performing

Then comes, the moment that we were ALL waiting for: BLUE IVY CARTER. She is a BEAUTIFUL baby girl

Well, I hope you all enjoyed my favorite moments! This was a beautiful gift from an amazing performer!

My First Week at Discovery!

Hey Readers!

Sorry for the delay. I was away getting myself acclimated to my new life that now consists of being: a full-time student and senior in college, an intern at TLC, the co-host and co-producer of a radio show, an entrepreneur, a blogger and an intern with non-profit organization SimpleComplexity LLC.

TLC-HD-logo

Needless to say, I am starting to think that I am going to spontaneously combust one day! Buuuut, in the meantime, I’m enjoying  it!

Now! On to my first week at Discovery! To put it lightly, it was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE it! I can already tell that i’m going to learn A LOT! I won’t be able to give you all a play-by-play of what I do there, as a lot of what I deal with is strictly confidential, but I can certainly provide you all with an overview!

photo 1

Day One: Day one was NERVE-WRECKING! to say the least! I was a complete and utter DISASTER as far as nervousness was concerned. That quickly subsided when I began to meet some of the AMAZING people that were other interns. I am the only intern in my department and unfortunately won’t have very much interaction with other interns, but it was great to still get a chance to meet some awesome people.

ORIENTATION TIME!!!! We learned a lot about the company and the history, which was great! We also learned that out of the 3,449 applications that they received, only 121 of us were chosen!!!!! THAT was certainly one of my highlights.

1,2 skip a few and our supervisors were there to get us! Mine, is an AMAZING woman who has been with the company for 10+ years and is GREAT at what she does! I feel so honored to be able to work under someone who has accomplished as much as she has.

My welcome sign on the board to my cubicle. (Jada is my middle name. My first name is Shirley, but no one calls me that)

Day Two: I edited my FIRST press release in the corporate world. It’s very hard to transition from writing in school to writing in the REAL world. Journalists are SOOOOOO critical about the way that things are worded and writing for the media is COMPLETELY different from writing for literary purposes.

I also created a media list using this amazing software that i’m not sure if I can mention or not. It allows PR professionals direct access to media representatives. It makes creating media lists a walk in the park  compared to the caveman-like methods using hours of research that I have utilized to make them in the past.

I also took some time to learn more about the TLC brand and the shows. I definitely feel that it’s important to learn all that you can about the brand that you are representing during an internship.

Hope I didn’t bore you all for too long!

Until Next Time….

My Life is Changing…..

So, as many of you fashionistas know, I have not posted for about a month now and I feel that I cannot go another day without explaining to you why I have been gone.

In an effort not to drown you in text, i’m including photos of myself from while I was away…..

To begin, iiamcouture.com is changing because, well, i’m growing up and changing. I haven’t posted about fashion event coverage because I have been transitioning into my career. I have been tirelessly working on establishing myself early-on and pre-graduation as a Public Relations practitioner.

Now, onto what I will be blogging about!

In my absence, I snagged an internship with none other than:

Discovery_Communications

I’m nothing short of COMPLETELY EXCITED and can’t wait until I start. I’ll be working with the Director of Publicity and the Public Relations team for:

Next, is my baby, my Public Relations firm that I have already begun to craft. I currently have 5 clients:

Last, but not least, I will be continuing to post about my heart: FASHION! However, I will be focusing on outfit of the day looks, looks for less, style spotlight and my top celebrity looks.

Thank you to all of my loyal followers who have stuck with me in my absence and , as promised, the giveaway will be posted as soon I get back to Maryland (I’m in Florida now 🙂 )
